Course overview

Students completing this course will understand and be able to use integrated pest management strategies to maintain plant health in agricultural, viticultural, horticultural and environmental ecosystems, while keeping economic, environmental and social implications in mind.

Course learning outcomes

  • Diagnose common causes of plant damage, especially by pests, and identify the agent(s) responsible
  • Explain the influence of biological and ecological processes on pest populations and the impact of management practices on pest populations
  • Make informed decisions about practices to manage insects, pathogens and weeds by applying an understanding of pest management practices; monitoring and sampling pest populations; interpreting sampling data; and; forecasting future populations appropriately
  • Create an integrated pest management program and communicate the benefits and limitations of its components to a non-technical and scientific audience
