Course overview

A general introduction to the biology of plants. Lectures and practicals cover plant structure, function, classification, diversity, evolution and responses to environmental stress, providing a valuable basis for future plant-related courses.

  • The Past: Plant evolution
  • The Present: Vegetative Organs
  • The Present: Reproductive Organs
  • The Future

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain how plant form, function, and diversity has changed through evolutionary time by identifying major historical events in the transition of land plants from aquatic to terrestrial environments.
  • Interpret how plants change their physical environment and interact with other organisms by examining past and present evidence.
  • Determine how the physiology of plants and their reproductive strategies can respond to changing environments.
  • Develop skills in collecting, interpreting and presenting scientific observations in the field of plant sciences.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply plant biology principles to propose science-based solutions for real-world problems.
