Course overview

To introduce students to the general principles of microbiology and to provide a basis for the further studies in clinical microbiology and molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases.

Course learning outcomes

  • State the fundamental structural, physiological and genetic features of microbes, and how these features contribute to growth, adaptation and survival
  • Provide an overview of key mechanisms in microbial pathogenesis, including transmission, colonisation and damage to the host
  • Articulate the mechanisms by which DNA is transmitted between bacteria, and the implications of this transmission for bacterial adaptation
  • Describe the core techniques and technologies used in the identification of microbes, and the approaches used to control their growth in environmental, laboratory and clinical contexts
  • Design simple experiments related to the practice of microbiology, and demonstrate understanding of the range of techniques required to investigate microbes of interest
