Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive survey of concepts related to quantitative traits, the genetic determination of developmental pathways, the various types of human genetic mutation that lead to disease, the pathogenic pathways from genotype to phenotype and the legal regulatory framework for research in genetics. This course expands from the foundation laid in Genetics IIA and IIB and presents cutting edge research topics in the field of developmental, quantitative, and human medical genetics.

Course learning outcomes

  • Carry out hands-on practical experimental skills and techniques and/or computer analysis approaches applicable to genetic research
  • Interpret and present experimental findings in various formats.
  • Apply skills in experimental design to critically evaluation examples and/or design experiments to address complex genetic questions.
  • Work collaboratively in a team-based environment, demonstrating effective communication, project management, and problem-solving skills to achieve common goals
  • Perform laboratory techniques safely and according to legislative requirements
  • Adhere to scientific regulatory requirements and research integrity standards for data collection, storage, analysis, and documentation
