Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive survey of concepts related to quantitative traits, the genetic determination of developmental pathways, the various types of human genetic mutation that lead to disease, the pathogenic pathways from genotype to phenotype and the legal regulatory framework for research in genetics.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explore the genetic basis of plant and invertebrate development and mammalian embryogenesis and analyse how evolution shapes developmental processes
  • Use genomic tools to perform genetic analysis for interpreting genetic basis and structure of quantitative trait variation in a population
  • Categorise different types of genetic disease based on their underlying causes and evaluate the genetic basis of cancer and its implications for diagnosis and treatment
  • Explain the basic principles of pharmacology and genomics as they pertain to pharmacogenetics and apply the available information resources for gene-drug interactions
  • Discuss legal and regulatory issues related to genetics research and address ethical dilemmas in genetic counselling and personalised medicine
