Course overview

This course introduces applications of genetic analysis, including basic principles of population, developmental and evolutionary genetics and introductory concepts in quantitative traits, developmental genetics, epigenetics and genomics, with an emphasis on ethical approaches to modern genetics. This course and Genetics IIA provide the foundation for third year genetics subjects in the Genetics major.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply population and evolutionary genetics principles to explain situations and predict outcomes, including calculations as demonstrated in class
  • Integrate principles of classical and molecular genetics to explain, discuss and predict situations in human genetics and genomic studies
  • Integrate principles of classical and molecular genetics to explain and discuss genetic analysis of complex biological processes
  • Following guidelines, generate, analyse and interpret experimental data, and present the results in an appropriate scientific format
  • Discuss ethical principles in relation to genetic research past, current and future
