Course overview

Explores the science of microbial infection and how it leads to disease transmission. Students will apply this learning to the individual, to patient safety in a health care setting and the broader community.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and contrast the structure, characteristics and function of microorganisms, their habitats and growth requirements in relation to health care settings
  • Analyse the factors involved in pathogenicity and virulence of microorganisms and how this relates to the infective process
  • Critiques surveillance systems for healthcare associated infection and its application in a variety of healthcare settings
  • Compare and assess local, national and international approaches to management of pandemics
