Course overview
This course provides students with the opportunity to independently design and complete a research project in the field of urban and regional planning. Students will formulate a research question, undertake a critical literature review, design an appropriate methodology, gather and analyse data, and present their findings. Guided by a supervisor, students will demonstrate advanced skills in ethical research practice, analytical reasoning, and professional communication. The course culminates in a 9,000-word research project and is a capstone experience that supports pathways into planning practice or further research.

Course learning outcomes
- Design and plan a research project that addresses a relevant issue in urban and regional planning of advanced theoretical and/or professional significance
- Apply ethical and rigorous research methods to collect, analyse and interpret primary and/or secondary data to address the research question
- Demonstrate research independence, self-direction, effective time management, good communication, and responsiveness to critical feedback
- Produce and present an independent research project that articulates a coherent argument, draws evidence-based conclusions, and contributes to the advancement of planning theory, policy, or practice
