Course overview
In this course, students will develop an in-depth understanding of the dynamic social, cultural and ethical contexts of sustainable design. Students will develop their knowledge of consumerism, social change and sustainability, particularly in regard to technological artefacts, innovation and behavioural change. Students will gain an understanding of creating more sustainable urban design and housing in a global industrialised culture that is linked to sustainable transport and communications systems. Students are also introduced to notions of the ethics of and practices around waste, manufacturing and industrial ecology and are encouraged to consider the design and development of self-sustaining communities using the principles of sustainable design.

- Articulate an indepth understanding of major theories about consumption, technology, human environments and social change relevant to sustainable design
- Critically evaluate a selection of notable examples of sustainable development and design
- Effectively describe the relationship between a work of design and its environmental, social and cultural contexts
- Articulate the dynamic interplay of social and cultural resources in the development of works of sustainable design
