Course overview

This course will provide students with an overview of the history and scope of urban and regional planning and to contemporary issues in planning theory and practice. Students will develop an understanding of the historical development of urban and regional planning including the economic, social and cultural processes shaping urban and regional development, contemporary approaches to planning, and alternative planning histories. Students will gain knowledge in strategic and statutory planning processes in urban and regional development, planning and governance.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse the origins of current approaches to urban and regional planning and of historical explanations of the development of contemporary planning
  • Critique rationales for government intervention through public planning and of debates about the extent and legitimacy of such intervention
  • Critically discuss a range of current planning concerns, including urban sprawl and containment, sustainable urban form and planning for diversity
  • Synthesise the basic elements of the strategic and statutory planning system in Australia
