Course overview
This course advances students' skills in transforming design concepts into manufacturable products for low-volume production. It covers material properties, structural design, and the integration of appropriate technologies. Students will gain an understanding of material characteristics, structural integrity, and practical production applications. By fostering propositional, creative, and critical thinking, the course ensures students are prepared to address complex design problems, with a strong awareness of social, ethical, and environmental impacts, required in professional industrial design practice.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate and assess different materials used in industrial design, including their properties such as strength, flexibility, and sustainability, as well as synthesize various production techniques suitable for low-volume manufacturing through comprehensive testing, analysis, and critical assessment
- Integrate sustainable materials and ethical considerations into design projects, demonstrating responsible material choices and justifying them based on social, ethical, and environmental impact assessments
- Apply fundamental and advanced principles of structural design to create and evaluate load-bearing structures, ensuring product safety and durability, as demonstrated in a structural analysis report using analytical tools
