Course overview

This course deepens students' understanding of human factors and usability in innovative product design. It covers research methodologies and evaluation techniques to inform product development processes. Students will develop critical analysis, creative problem-solving, and effective communication skills to apply their knowledge of human factors and usability into designing new products. The course aligns with the Program's goals by enhancing students' ability to synthesise and evaluate information, think critically and creatively, and communicate their ideas effectively, preparing them for professional practice in industrial design.

Course learning outcomes

  • Interpret and apply anthropometric principles to support evidence-based design decisions in industrial design.
  • Select and apply appropriate research methods to investigate user needs and define usability requirements for a moderately complex physical product.
  • Select and apply design methods to improve the usability of a moderately complex physical product through iteration.
  • Conduct usability and ergonomic evaluations with physical prototypes to identify and address human factors issues in industrial design.
  • Present and justify product design proposals using appropriate documentation, including physical prototypes, images, and text that communicate design intent.
  • Apply universal design principles for the design and evaluation of a moderately complex physical product.
