Course overview

This course will introduce students to the design principles and elements of architectural structures and construction over a broad range of scales. Students will be introduced to the relationship of order, structure, and construction in architecture through an investigation of fundamental structural principles, systems, and elements. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between structure, space, and form; the behaviour of structures under load; and the supporting and enclosing functions of building. Students will apply basic skills in the appropriate selection of a variety of simple structural solutions across a range of scales.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify, assess, and incorporate appropriate framing standards for simple building projects
  • Investigate and integrate simple structural and construction principles in built environments
  • Identify the structural principles and elements constituting a simple structure
  • Apply knowledge of structural principles to the design and communication of a simple structure
  • Apply knowledge of strategies in identifying building frame and skin
