Course overview

To provide students with an understanding of how physical infrastructure is planned for and provided as part of the process of urban and regional development

Course learning outcomes

  • Acquire knowledge of the characteristics of various types of infrastructure technologies such as transport, water, energy, waste management and telecommunications and their application in the planning of human settlements in urban and rural contexts.
  • Develop competencies in analytical skills for critically assessing the performance of key infrastructure elements for various types and scales of development in a range of urban and regional contexts.
  • Describe and explain how co-ordinated infrastructure planning forms part of the broader strategic planning process.
  • Apply problem solving capabilities (developed through the course objectives 1, 2 and 3) and communication skills working within a team to produce a coordinated and integrated `state of the art' Infrastructure Master Plan for a nominated hypothetical community or urban area that effectively responds to contemporary and anticipated planning challenges.
