Alcohol at campus events

Alcohol at Campus Events

Adelaide University supports responsible alcohol service at events held on University grounds. To ensure the safety of all attendees and compliance with South Australian law, strict conditions apply to the supply and service of alcohol on campus.

BYO alcohol is not permitted at events held on Adelaide University grounds.

If you're planning an event that includes alcohol, you must follow the University's approval process and meet all legal and safety requirements. This includes submitting the appropriate forms, applying for a short-term liquor licence (if required), and arranging security where necessary.

Security is mandatory for events with 30 or more guests where alcohol is served.

Request to serve alcohol

An Application to Serve Alcohol form must be completed at least two weeks prior to any event where alcohol is being served or sold.

As part of this application, you must also provide:

  • An event safety checklist and risk assessment
  • A Security Guard Hire request
  • A short-term liquor licence, unless your event is being catered by an approved caterer / business with its own liquor licence.
  • The name of a Responsible Person (RP) if required by your licence.

A liquor licence is not required for staff drinks on campus if attended by no more than 30 people, and where the business unit supplies the alcohol.

Events involving alcohol may only proceed once:

  • The short-term licence is issued
  • All documentation is submitted
  • Security arrangements are confirmed

It is the responsibility of the short-term license to ensure their event conforms to all requirements of the issuing body and relevant legislation.

Displaying your liquor licence

You must display:

  • A copy of your short-term liquor licence at the event entrance
  • Any signage required by the licence at the bar or alcohol service areas

Security requirements

Security is a critical part of alcohol service on campus.

For events with more than 30 guests where alcohol is served, a minimum of one security guard is required. An additional guard is required per 100 attendees.

Events held at, or catered by Taikunthi, the National Wine Centre or the UniBar will include security and Responsible Persons. The cost will be included in the catering quote.

Only University-approved security providers may be used.
