Work Integrated Learning Policy

1. Purpose

1.1. This policy describes the principles under which Adelaide University develops and manages Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities.

2. Scope

2.1. This policy applies to all WIL activities undertaken by Adelaide University students.

2.2. This policy does not apply to research internships undertaken by research degree students, which are subject to the Research Degrees Policy1 and the associated Research Internships Procedure.1

3. Policy principles

3.1. Adelaide University will offer students high quality WIL opportunities and will partner with industry, business, government and/or community organisations, as applicable.

3.2. WIL activities will provide authentic work-based activities that integrate theory with practice, and form part of a credit-bearing coherent program of study.

3.3. All coursework WIL activities will have clearly articulated learning outcomes and assessments to support these outcomes.

3.4. Adelaide University will ensure that WIL activities are fit-for-purpose, accessible, and meet professional accreditation/registration requirements.

3.5. WIL activities will be accessible and inclusive and, where possible, adapt to student needs.

3.6. Adelaide University will ensure that students undertaking WIL activities are supervised, monitored and provided with the required support to ensure their wellbeing and safety.

3.7. WIL provided in conjunction with an external party will be governed by a formal agreement between Adelaide University and the external party, and will comply with relevant Adelaide University policies, procedures and legislative requirements.

4. Definitions

4.1. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is an umbrella term for a pedagogical approach that combines theoretical learning of a discipline or professional context with practical experience, either actual, simulated and/or virtual, as a planned part of the curriculum. This approach helps students apply academic concepts to real-world work and professional situations, enhancing their skills, employability and understanding.
