Student Safety and Wellbeing Procedure

1. Purpose

1.1. This procedure outlines processes for providing students with a safe environment, information about how they can protect their safety, and steps they can take if their safety or wellbeing is impacted.

1.2. This procedure should be read in conjunction with the Student Safety and Wellbeing Policy.

2. Scope

2.1. This procedure applies to all Adelaide University students.

3. Procedure

3.1. Adelaide University will meet its obligations to care for the safety and wellbeing of all students by:

3.1.1. Ensuring staff take reasonable steps to provide a safe environment at all locations where Adelaide University students are involved with their program whether in person or online, in Australia and overseas.

3.1.2. Taking steps to understand the support needs of particular student cohorts and implementing effective mitigation and management strategies for identified risks.

3.1.3. Contacting individual commencing students with information about:

3.1.3.1. Safety on campus.

3.1.3.2. Who to contact to report an issue related to safety or wellbeing, including external services.

3.1.3.3. Who to contact if their personal circumstances are impacting their education.

3.1.4. Providing advice and support that is appropriate, and when necessary, trauma-informed.

3.1.5. Advising students and staff on how they can enhance their own, and others’, safety and wellbeing both on campus and online.

3.2. Adelaide University will have dedicated staff that:

3.2.1. Understand the regulatory requirements relating to international students on a student visa, in particular the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000, and the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 (the National Code), and are able to support Adelaide University’s compliance with regulatory requirements.

3.2.2. Provide international students with general information regarding support services, critical incidents, life in Australia, and safety issues as part of their admission and transition.

3.2.3. Respond within one business day to non-urgent questions from international students reporting issues related to safety or wellbeing. Students who need urgent responses to safety issues should call 000 and request the appropriate emergency service.

3.2.4. Connect students to relevant specialised support services for issues related to safety and wellbeing.

3.3. Academic Board will be provided with a report annually on matters related to student safety and wellbeing.
