Australia’s newest university has been highly ranked among global leaders for sustainability in updated list.
Adelaide University has performed strongly in its first appearance in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026.
The annual sustainability ranking measures impact across environmental, social, and good governance indicators, with Adelaide University placing 89th globally and ninth in Australia.
"This is a fantastic benchmark as we prepare to launch Adelaide University next year," says Professor Anton Middelberg, Deputy Vice Chancellor - Research and Innovation, Adelaide University.
"Together, we’re building a future-focused institution committed to sustainability and positive global impact."
Nearly 2,000 institutions have been included in this year's rankings, showcasing sustainability commitments from around the world.
Adelaide University recorded an average score of 90.8, with scores above 90 for environmental research, equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education, employability, health and wellbeing and governance.
"Sustainability has been a clear priority for the foundation Universities - the University of South Australia and University of Adelaide - and will continue when the doors open to Adelaide University in 2026," says Professor Middelberg.
UniSA met carbon neutrality for its operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) in 2025, while the University of Adelaide reduced its operational emissions by 52 per cent between 2010 and 2024.
"Sustainability is also a key consideration in research, with academics working in a variety of fields which include optimising and storing renewable energy, new construction methods and encouraging circular economies," says Professor Middelberg.
"This focus aims to reinforce the vital connection between healthy environments and community wellbeing, working to ensure our communities are better places."
