How can I prepare to move to Australia, what can I bring?

To ensure a smooth start to your study adventure in Adelaide make sure you have packed all key documentation, appropriate clothing and any necessary electronics, toiletries and medicines.
Documentation
The following documentation will be required upon arrival in Australia, so we recommend these documents be packed in your hand luggage:
- Student visa
- Passport
- Identification (driver’s license or birth certificate)
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy documentation
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and offer letter.
It is also a good idea to carry some Australian currency in cash with you (around AUD$500) and some additional funds available in travellers’ cheques or via ATM (around AUD$1500).
Clothing
The weather in Adelaide may be very different to your home country. Winters are usually wet and cold with a minimum temperature of 8˚ Celsius to an average daily maximum of 16˚ Celsius, while summers are hot and dry with a minimum of 16˚ Celsius to an average daily maximum of 28˚Celsius but can reach up to 40˚ Celsius in the peak of summer.
There is no dress code at Australian universities, with most students choosing to wear comfortable, casual clothes such as jeans, t-shirts, hoodies and sneakers on campus. You may also wish to pack some more formal clothing for special events, and any traditional cultural clothing you wish to wear.
Electronics
If you are bringing any of your electronic devices such as laptop, tablet or phone, remember to bring your chargers. Australian power outlets are likely different from those in your home country so you will need a travel adapter and/or voltage convertor. In Australia the standard voltage is 220-240 and the frequency is 50Hz.
Toiletries and medicines
While personal toiletries and grooming items such deodorant, soap and toothpaste are readily and affordably available at most stores in Australia, it is a good idea to pack some of your familiar favourites to use as you settle into your new home. You may also like to consider packing some travel size toiletries in your hand luggage in case of any baggage delays upon your arrival.
Before you depart make sure to have any necessary medical, optical and dental check-ups and organize any prescription medications you may require along with a letter from your doctor (in English) outlining your prescribed medicines. Keep these items in your hand luggage for easy access during transit.
Do not bring
Australia has strict quarantine laws, particularly around items made from wood, plant and animal materials. All fresh food and egg products are prohibited, and you will be required to declare all food items in your possession or risk a fine. Once in Adelaide you will find a diverse range of food stores with items from around the world so it is likely you will be able to find some of your favourite foods upon arrival!
