The Sally Smith Commencement Grant in Soil, Agriculture, Food and Wine Sciences
was established in 2020 at the University of Adelaide by Frank Andrew Smith in
honour of his wife Sally Smith. Sally was Emeritus Professor in the School of
Agriculture, Food and Wine and held several positions at the University of
Adelaide from 1967 to 2019, including a personal Chair in Soil Science (1995)
and Director of the Centre for Plant Root Symbioses (1998). Sally was a world
authority on the mycorrhizal symbiosis between plants and fungi and was elected
to the Australian Academy of Science in 2001.
The Sally Smith Grant in Soil, Agriculture, Food & Wine Sciences
will support a commencing student in financial need undertaking an
undergraduate program of study in the sciences of agriculture, food or wine. Preference
is given to students who are relocating from a regional, rural or remote area, or
experiencing another disadvantage.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this grant, applicants must:
- Be commencing a program of study in the sciences of soil, agriculture, food or wine
- Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Australia or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
- Be enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place
- Demonstrate you are in financial need*
* Applicants must demonstrate financial need and provide supporting documentary evidence at the time of application, e.g. details of income tested Commonwealth income support payment, such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY benefits, or other details of their financial circumstances.
* Evidence of Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) application or approval does not demonstrate financial need.

Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Financial need Answers to questions on the application form
- Preference for a student who has relocated from a regional, rural or remote location, or experiencing another disadvantage
