In 1944, Sarah Barrans bequeathed money to the University of Adelaide to establish a scholarship in Geological Science or Metallurgical Science, in memory of her brother, James Barrans. The Scholarship supports students undertaking an Honours degree in Geology, Geophysics or Petroleum Geology at Adelaide University.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be commencing an Honours degree in Geology, Geophysics or Petroleum Geology
- Be an Australian Citizen, permanent resident of Australia, New Zealand Citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
- Be enrolled on a full time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place
Selection criteria
Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Academic merit (GPA)
- Answers to questions on the application form
