How to apply for scholarships

Your step-by-step guide to scholarships

Adelaide University is committed to providing a range of scholarships to support students from all walks of life to access higher education. Scholarships can make university life easier by offering more than just financial support – many include work experience, mentoring and may even include overseas opportunities.

To help you get started, we’ve created this step-by-step scholarship application guide. It covers everything from applying and assessment to outcomes and payment, so you'll know what to expect at every stage.

Scholarship application guide

Follow the steps below to find and apply for a scholarship that suits your individual circumstances.

To apply for most Adelaide University scholarships, you must be currently enrolled in an Adelaide University program. A few scholarships are open to students commencing study in the following year.

The application method for each scholarship is listed on the individual scholarship listing. Most are available for application through myScholarships on the Student Portal. Applications for some scholarships may be submitted via an online form or via SATAC.

Once you’ve completed your responses to the eligibility criteria in myScholarships, you’ll be able to upload the required supporting documents to your online application.

You must upload all requested documents before you can submit and finalise your application.

You can save your progress and return to your application at any time before the closing date. You can also remove and replace uploaded documents as needed.

Just make sure all changes are made before the scholarship or grant closes. After the closing date, you won’t be able to access your application to upload or edit documents.

When submitting documents for your scholarship or grant application, please keep the following in mind:

  • Maximum file size: 10MB
  • Accepted file types: png, jpg, jpeg, gif, pdf, doc, docx

View our Supporting Documentation Guide for more hints and tips.

Resubmitting documents

If your document is rejected, you’ll be notified via your student email with the reason for rejection and instructions on how to reupload.

To resubmit a document:

  • Log in to myScholarships via the Student Portal
  • Select ‘Continue’ next to the relevant scholarship or grant
  • Upload your updated document.

Final step: after uploading your document, make sure to select ‘Complete Application’ to submit your application.

Supporting documentation for financial need

If money worries are making it hard for you to start or continue your studies at AU, we strongly encourage you to apply for scholarships and other financial support. These opportunities can ease financial pressure and help you focus on your studies.

Your application is completely private and will not affect your application to study at AU, your admission, or your status as a student.

Supporting documentation for financial needTo help us understand your financial situation, you may be asked to provide some information. If you don’t receive a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, or a means-tested Centrelink payment, you might be asked to complete a Financial Details for Scholarship Eligibility form as part of your application.

We especially encourage you to apply if you’re under 22, not receiving a means-tested benefit like Centrelink Income Support, but still need extra financial help to study.

If your application isn’t successful, it doesn’t mean you’re not in need—just that other applicants may have been assessed as having greater financial need.

About means testing:

Means testing looks at your income and assets to determine if you’re eligible for support like Centrelink payments. For the latest information, visit the Australian Government payments guide on Services Australia.

If you already receive a means-tested Centrelink payment, please upload evidence durin your application if prompted.

If you don’t receive means-tested benefits, we’ll assess your financial need using the Financial Details for Scholarship Eligibility form. Only complete this form if your online application asks for it, and make sure to fill it out carefully and upload all required supporting documents through myScholarships.

After the application closing date, your scholarship application will be assessed based on the selection criteria and the documents you’ve submitted. Some scholarships may also require an interview.

During the assessment period, Adelaide University staff may contact you to clarify information or request additional documents.

If the scholarship requires an interview and you’re shortlisted, you’ll receive an email with the interview details including date, time, location, panel members and what to expect.

You’ll be notified of the outcome via your student email, usually around eight weeks after applications close.

If no applicant meets the criteria, the scholarship may not be awarded. If multiple applicants are equally meritorious, the scholarship may be shared.

Successful applicants will receive an email outlining the outcome, scholarship terms and any ongoing conditions. You’ll also receive an automated offer email, which must be accepted to receive payment.

Once you accept your scholarship offer, you’ll be prompted to enter your bank account details. This is the account where your scholarship funds will be deposited.

Scholarship payments are made via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and you’ll receive a remittance advice from Adelaide University once the transaction has been processed.

There are two types of scholarship payments, depending on the terms of your award:

  • One-off payment: You may receive a one-off payment of a set amount. This may be paid in instalments across the year.
  • Ongoing payment: You may receive financial assistance across multiple years during your studies at Adelaide University. This may also be paid in instalments across the year.

Payment timeframes

For one-off scholarships, payment is made within eight weeks after either the scholarship closing date or the relevant Study Period census date, once all conditions have been met.

For ongoing scholarships, payment is made within eight weeks after either the relevant Study Period census date or the Study Period result release date, once all conditions have been met.

Ongoing scholarships

An ongoing scholarship can provide financial assistance across multiple years of your studies. If you are the recipient of an ongoing scholarship, you'll need to meet the recipient conditions to continue receiving your payment. You may be required to complete regular reviews.

Ongoing recipient conditions

Your scholarship offer email will outline the conditions you’ll need to meet to continue receiving your scholarship. These are known as Ongoing Recipient Conditions and apply throughout the duration of your scholarship.

Conditions may include:

  • Staying enrolled in an Adelaide University program
  • Maintaining a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Completing a set number of courses
  • Providing progress reports or evidence of spending
  • Participating in community or placement activities
  • Acting as a Scholarship Ambassador (e.g. attending events or appearing in marketing materials).
Ongoing reviews

Your scholarship eligibility will be reviewed regularly throughout your studies. Most reviews happen automatically and are based on your academic progress, such as your grades, enrolment status and completed courses.

In some cases, you may be asked to complete an online eligibility review. If this applies to you, you’ll receive an email with instructions and a due date. The online review is completed via myScholarships in the Student Portal. You’ll answer a few questions about your current circumstances and may need to upload supporting documents. Once submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

If your documents are incorrect or incomplete, you’ll be notified and given a chance to resubmit before the deadline. Reviews are assessed after the census or result release date, and you’ll be notified of the outcome in 2-4 weeks.

If your circumstances change or you’re unable to meet the scholarship conditions, contact the Adelaide University Scholarships team for support.
