This Scholarship was established in 1896 when funds raised by public subscription were paid to the University of Adelaide to establish a Studentship in memory of the late John Anderson Hartley. Mr Hartley served as Inspector-General of Schools, Headmaster of Prince Alfred College (1871–1875), and as a member and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide from 1893 until his death in 1896.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the grant, applicants must:
- Be commencing a Bachelor of Arts with the highest overall ATAR
- Be an Australian Citizen, permanent resident of Australia, New Zealand Citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
- Be enrolled on a full time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place

Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Academic merit (ATAR)
Important information
- There is no application process for this scholarship, it will be directly awarded to a commencing student with the highest overall ATAR
- If there are two or more students of equal merit, the scholarship will be divided equally amongst them
- You must meet all of the above listed criteria to be eligible
- The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is offered
