The fund was established in 2016 by the University of Adelaide from donations received from various donors, with the purpose of establishing a scholarship in memory of Dr George Ian Ogilvie Duncan. Dr Duncan was a lecturer at the Adelaide Law School whose tragic drowning in the River Torrens in May 1972 prompted the first attempt at gay law reform in South Australia. The fund supports an annual scholarship for an undergraduate law student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other gender diverse (LGBTIQA+) issues.
