The John Creswell Scholarship was established in 1913 from donations by a group of public subscribers to the John Creswell Memorial Committee in memory of the late John Creswell. John Creswell (1858–1909) was a company secretary and key figure in South Australian sport. He helped found and served as early secretary of the South Australian Football Association, played cricket for Norwood, and was secretary of both the Kensington and Norwood Cricketing Association (1881–83) and the South Australian Cricket Association (1883–1909). From 1900 until his death, he also served as secretary of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
