This Scholarship was established by the University of Adelaide following a bequest received in 1969 from Edward Warner Benham, a prominent academic and lawyer. Mr Benham attended the Collegiate School of St Peter (1882-87) and the University of Adelaide (LL.B., 1891) and was acting Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University in 1937.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be undertaking an Honours Degree in the area of English Literature or English Political History
- Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Australia or New Zealand Citizen
- Be enrolled on a full-time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place
Selection criteria
Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Academic Merit (GPA)
- The relevance of each student's thesis topic
- Answers to questions on the application form
Important information
- You must meet all of the above listed criteria to be eligible to apply
- The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is offered
- Students receiving other Adelaide University Scholarships may apply for this Scholarship
- The successful candidates will be required to undertake a research project (minimum of 12 points) under the direction of an academic staff member in the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities
- The students' research topics will be determined by each student in conjunction with the relevant supervisors and School.
- Research projects must be in the areas of English Literature or English Political History.
