In 1879, the South Australian Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association Incorporated paid to the University of Adelaide the sum of £150 for the purpose of establishing a Scholarship known as The Commercial Travellers’ Association Scholarship.
Through the generosity of Sir Edwin Smith, the Association has been enabled to pay a further sum for the scholarship and requested the University to change the name of the scholarship to the 'Eric Smith Scholarship’, in memory of Lieutenant Eric Wilkes Smith, a grandson of Sir Edwin who was killed in the attack upon the Dardanelles on 25 April 1915.

Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Be commencing the Bachelor of Economics with the highest overall ATAR
- Be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia
- Be enrolled on a full time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place
Selection criteria
Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Academic merit (ATAR)
Important information
- There is no application process for this scholarship, it will be directly awarded to a commencing student with the highest overall ATAR
- If there are two or more students of equal merit, the scholarship will be divided equally amongst them
- You must meet all of the above listed criteria to be eligible
- The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is offered
