Levels of study explained

Adelaide University offers a variety of study levels including pre-degrees, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate coursework programs and research degrees. These different levels of study enable students to progress from foundational education to more advanced, specialised learning. Pathway programs are also available to prepare students for entry or transition into an undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate Certificate

An Undergraduate Certificate is the ideal way to accelerate your career development, learn new practical skills or pave the way for future study. It’s a flexible option with a low time commitment. It can be completed in six months of full-time study and is typically made up of four introductory courses – giving you a snapshot of knowledge in a speciality area. You’ll graduate with a university qualification or be ready to transition into further study by applying your credit to an undergraduate degree.

Diploma

A Diploma is a great way to develop a solid foundation of skills and boost your employability in just 12 months of full-time study. Comprising eight undergraduate courses, it equips you with intermediate-level knowledge and a strong skillset across key concepts in your chosen field. On completion, you’ll have the flexibility to apply your credits to an undergraduate degree, or use your expertise to advance in your current career or explore a new professional path.

Associate Degree

An Associate Degree offers a fast-tracked pathway to a university qualification, equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor degree. You can choose to graduate with a stand-alone qualification, or continue your studies and complete a full bachelor with just one additional year of study. Whether you’re building on previous studies, advancing within your industry, or looking to change careers, an associate degree provides the ideal foundation to expand your expertise and bridge any skills gaps.

Bachelor degree

A Bachelor degree is the most widely studied tertiary qualification, equipping you with the comprehensive knowledge, practical skills and industry connections to achieve your career goals. Completed over three years of full-time study, it also serves as a key requirement for entry into many professional fields and further postgraduate study.

Graduate Certificate

A Graduate Certificate offers a flexible entry point into postgraduate study, typically completed in just six months of full-time study. It builds expertise in a specialised field, making it an excellent option for advancing your professional standing, boosting earning potential or stepping into more senior roles. If you’re new to formal study, you may qualify for admission based on your proven work experience.

Graduate Diploma

A Graduate Diploma typically requires prior completion of a bachelor’s degree and is designed to provide advanced knowledge in a specific field over one year of full-time study. This can serve as a standalone credential or as a pathway into a related master’s degree, offering flexible options for professional skill development or further study.

Master’s degree

A Master’s degree is designed for those seeking higher-level expertise in a specialised field, building upon prior undergraduate or postgraduate coursework. Usually completed over one to two years, master’s degrees can include either coursework, research or a professional blend, providing pathways to doctoral study or career advancement.

Research degree

A Research degree is an advanced program enabling students to deeply investigate a topic of their choice through independent inquiry, guided by expert supervisors. These programs include the Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
