Applying for an exchange or study abroad program with Adelaide University is quick and easy. Whether you’re preparing your application yourself or applying through one of our authorised education agents, we’re here to help at every step. 

All international applications to study in the study abroad and exchange programs at Adelaide University are submitted through our online application system. Use the information below to help you prepare, submit and track your application status.

Before you start your application, it’s important to know whether you’ll be studying as an exchange student or a study abroad student. The exchange program is only available to students who are enrolled at and nominated by one of Adelaide University’s exchange partner universities. The study abroad program is available to all eligible students.

How to apply 


Study abroad and exchange students can study for one or two semesters, commencing in Semester 1 (from February–July) or Semester 2 (July–November).

Academic requirements  

You must either be a high school graduate or enrolled in a university or college and in good academic standing. Please get in touch with us for specific information.

English language requirements

International students from non-English speaking backgrounds must meet Adelaide University’s minimum English language requirements to be admitted to their chosen program. You can demonstrate your level of English language proficiency by providing the results of an accepted English language test. 

The required test score for the study abroad and exchange program is an Academic IELTS with a minimum overall score of 6.5, with no individual band less than 6.0 (or equivalent). Note: Some study areas may require a higher English language score.

There are also a wide range of tests and alternative ways of demonstrating English proficiency that can be accepted specifically for entry into the study abroad and exchange programs. Please contact the Global Learning team for further information. 

Documentation

You’ll need to supply the following documents (also translated to English where applicable) to apply for the exchange or study abroad program at Adelaide University:

  • Original language transcripts (translated to English if necessary)

  • Current enrolment of courses

  • Grading system used at your home university

  • Evidence of English language proficiency (if required)

  • Details page and signature page of your passport.

Depending on the courses you apply for, you may also need to provide:     

  • A portfolio of work (for creative courses)

  • Syllabi/detailed course description of courses taken at your home university. 

At Adelaide University, individual subjects are called ‘courses’ and there are hundreds to choose from at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. 

When submitting your application, you’ll be asked to nominate six courses per semester that you would like to study at Adelaide University. Even though you’ll only enrol into a maximum of four courses per semester, having additional courses approved provides flexibility in case of timetable clashes, or other unforeseen circumstances.

Exchange students must be nominated by their home university before applying to Adelaide University. Contact your home institution to find out about your exchange program and application process.

Once you’ve been nominated by your home university, you will receive an email with instructions and a link to our online application system.

If you're an international student interested in studying at Adelaide University for one or two semesters, but do not qualify for an exchange place, the study abroad program may be for you. 

Note that application deadlines are more flexible for study abroad students.

There are three main ways to apply:

  • Applying through your home university: speak to your home institution to find out if this is an option for you. 

  • Applying through an international representative or agent: contact one of our authorised education agents. Visit the Find an Education Agent webpage to find an agent in your country. 

Next steps 


After you’ve submitted your application, your selected courses will be assessed and once approved, you’ll receive an Offer of Admission. You may be asked to nominate additional courses during the assessment process if our Admissions team are unable to approve the courses you initially selected.

You can then use the online application system to accept your place at Adelaide University and make any required payments. 

You can also purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) through Adelaide University’s preferred provider in the online application system. Alternatively, you may choose your own approved third-party supplier and provide proof of your cover when you accept your Offer of Admission. Once you have finalised your payment (or provided evidence of exemption) we will confirm your acceptance. 

Once you’ve been accepted into the study abroad or exchange program, it’s time to prepare for your arrival. It’s important you check your emails regularly (including your spam folder) for updates about your enrolment, Orientation and arrival.

Airport pick up

Did you know that Adelaide University can collect you from the airport? You’ll have one less thing to worry about with Adelaide University’s free airport pick up service. As long as you book in advance, you’ll be travelling comfortably to your new home in Adelaide. Enrolling

Enrolling into your courses at Adelaide University is simple and easy. You’ll be sent instructions, including login details, before the semester starts. We encourage you to enrol before arriving in Adelaide to ensure you are well prepared and aware of what your class timetable will look like. 

If you would like to enrol in courses that aren’t listed on your Offer of Admission, you’ll need additional approval. This information will be sent to you before the start of the semester. 

Orientation 

Orientation is a great way to learn more about Adelaide University and Australian culture. Start building connections and meet fellow students – some might even end up in your classes! You’ll get valuable information that’ll help you settle into Australian life and study. Don’t miss it!
