About Pre-enrolment English Program

The Pre-enrolment English Program (PEP) will provide you with a direct entry pathway into degrees at Adelaide University. PEP helps you to develop English, communication, intercultural, and learner initiative skills for academic and professional settings. It builds your confidence and ability to engage fully in university life, both academically and socially. After successfully completing all course components, you won’t be required to complete another English test prior to entry into your chosen Adelaide University degree.

Offered from 10-week up to 35-week options, the PEP is tailored to your English language ability and needs. Your PEP program length depends on your English test score and your chosen degree’s specific entry requirements.

The PEP 30- and 35-week options are ‘extended’ options that combine your PEP course with General English for Academic Purposes (GEAP) classes. Starting your studies with the GEAP helps you build essential grammar and academic vocabulary skills, before you progress to your PEP English classes.

If you undertake a PEP extended option, you will complete a set amount of GEAP classes before moving into your PEP studies:

  • PEP extended 30-week: complete five weeks of GEAP before you commence 25 weeks of PEP classes.

  • PEP extended 35-week: complete 10 weeks of GEAP before you commence 25 weeks of PEP classes.

For a comprehensive list of all English language tests accepted by Adelaide University, visit the English language proficiency webpage. You can also check your preferred degree’s webpage for specific English language requirements.

What you’ll learn

The PEP is a communicative, task-based program designed to help you meet course goals and develop skills for academic and professional success. To get the most out of your studies, you are expected to become an independent learner and participate fully in all class and group activities.

You’ll actively participate through:

  • individual and group project work
  • oral presentations
  • reading, listening and note-taking
  • presenting in and leading tutorials
  • building research and academic writing skills and understanding academic culture
  • developing an action plan for personal language progress.

Upon successful completion, you will have developed English language, written, communication, research and critical thinking skills. You’ll be ready to participate in the academic culture of Adelaide University and be fully prepared for further studies. We’ll make sure you have a strong understanding of Australia’s intercultural experiences and a great network of friends to share your study experience.

PEP students are required to purchase a textbook. Academic culture: A student’s guide to studying at university, 4th Edition, by Jean Brick, Maria Herke & Deanna Wong, Macquarie University, Sydney. ISBN 9781352010343.

We also recommend that you purchase an English - English printed dictionary after consultation with your teacher.
