Entry requirements

Admission criteria

For admission to a Master of Philosophy degree, you will need to have completed either:

  • A Master degree by coursework with weighted average mark (WAM) of ≥ 65, incorporating at least 0.5 years full time (or part time equivalent) of research training with a WAM of ≥ 75*; or
  • A 4-year Bachelor (Honours) or Graduate Diploma (following a bachelor or honours degree) with an overall WAM of ≥ 65, incorporating at least 0.5 years full time (or part time equivalent) of research training with a WAM of ≥ 75*; or
  • A Graduate Certificate (Research Skills) with an overall WAM of ≥ 75, with approved professional experience.

* The 0.5 EFTSL of research training must have included at least 50% of research on a focussed topic.

Additional requirements

You will need to demonstrate that your prior qualifications are in a discipline relevant to the proposed area of research – unless an exemption is approved by the Pro Vice Chancellor: Research Training (or delegate).

Please note that admission to a research degree at Adelaide University is conditional on the availability of a suitable supervisory panel and resources to support the proposed project.

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Overview

Designed for those who have completed a Masters by coursework or an Honours Bachelor degree, our Master of Philosophy is 100% research-focused and takes two years to complete with full-time study.

Under the guidance of an experienced and supportive research supervisor, you’ll plan, design and complete your own independent research project about a topic you’re passionate about. You’ll also have the flexibility to develop a project in an area of personal interest and relevance to your field. This degree is self-directed, with no classes or coursework requirements. You will complete progress milestones that will help to keep you on track towards completion of your thesis or creative work. Your studies will culminate with the development of a substantial thesis or creative work and exegesis, and an oral examination of your thesis or creative work to a panel of examiners.

We understand balancing study with work, family responsibilities and other important commitments can be challenging. It’s why we’ve designed our Master of Philosophy to be flexible. Where possible, you can choose to study full-time or part-time, helping you pursue your study goals without forgoing your current commitments.

Scholarships available to domestic students

All domestic students accepted into the Master of Philosophy program at Adelaide University will receive a tuition-free place for up to two years for a Master program (or part-time equivalent) – effectively exempting domestic students from paying tuition during this period. Domestic students are also eligible to apply for Adelaide University Research Scholarships.

Scholarships available to international students 

International students are eligible to apply for Adelaide University Research Scholarships. International students who are successful in being awarded a living allowance scholarship will also receive a tuition fee waiver.

Completion requirements

To be awarded the degree of Master of Philosophy, you must complete:

  1. A program of transferable skills development 
  2. Probation and progress milestones 
  3. A substantial thesis or creative work and exegesis
  4. An oral examination of the thesis or creative work.

Adelaide University will offer innovative and flexible research degrees that provide more pathways into research.

Adelaide University's research degrees will be contemporary, internationally recognised, accessible, focused and flexible, including:

  • Doctor of Philosophy
  • Master of Philosophy
  • Master of Research

Furthermore, research-focused graduate certificates are in development, with further details to be released soon. These will be open for application in 2025 to start in 2026.

Applications for Adelaide University research degrees will open in early 2025 for commencement in 2026.

A range of scholarships will be available to support Graduate Researchers with the costs associated with undertaking a research degree, including living expenses, tuition and travel.

Tuition fee

You will find an indicative 2025 annual tuition fee quoted on the degree page or your Offer of Admission, which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) and appropriate yearly indexation. This is based on annual full-time enrolment (48 units per year). Please note that your tuition fees may be subject to an annual increase.

Non-tuition fees

You may incur incidental costs during your studies in addition to your tuition fees, known as non-tuition fees. Such as textbooks, Working with Children Clearance, materials for your degree.

Student Services and Amenities Fee

All students need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee based on full-time enrolment.

International students contribute to student services and amenities as a component of your tuition fees to support services of a non-academic nature, so there is no additional cost.

Domestic students need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee based on full-time enrolment.

Research degrees at Adelaide University will commence from January 2026.

Commencements for the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degree will be flexible and possible throughout the year. Commencements for the Master of Research will be confirmed and communicated as soon as possible.
