Entry requirements

Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.

  • A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) or bachelor honours (AQF level 8) degree or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution; OR
  • A completed nested or related graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or higher or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution.

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Overview

Design and develop amazing virtual, mixed and augmented reality experiences in our Master of Immersive Media Technologies. 

You’ll learn all about interactive design and gain advanced technical skills for developing digital assets using: 

  • 3D modelling 
  • Photogrammetry 
  • Digital sculpting 
  • Material painting and texturing 
  • Sound design/engineering 
  • Scripting 
  • AI tools. 

You’ll also gain a comprehensive understanding of the physiological and ergonomic implications of immersive technology design – examining how these factors can enhance or inhibit immersion and access. 

Deeply practical, you’ll put your learning into practice with hands-on projects and real-world learning throughout your studies.  

Emerge with the expertise ready for immersive media tech-focused roles in areas like entertainment, education and healthcare.  

What you'll learn

Adelaide University’s Master of Immersive Technology takes 18 months to two years to complete full-time, depending on your previous studies. The program focuses on both creative and technical skills needed in the immersive media industry.  

The degree combines different areas of study, mixing theory with hands-on learning and research. It's great for those with a background in immersive media looking to advance, or for graduates from other fields wanting to switch to this exciting industry. 

You’ll learn from experienced academics with links to industry and study future-focused topics, including: 

  • Virtual, mixed and augmented reality systems

  • Research communication. 

We offer an exciting range of electives to help tailor your studies to your passions. Whether you're interested in building a strong foundation in computer science, exploring the dynamic world of digital media, or getting involved in entrepreneurial ventures like the Tech eChallenge, there's something for everyone.   

You can also enhance your leadership skills with courses in project management or marketing for leaders. Or, explore the intersection of politics and technology with a course in cyberpolitics. These electives allow you to customise your degree and prepare for a future in the growing field of immersive media.

Design a study path that works for you

This degree is part of a stackable set of qualifications, meaning your study choices are flexible. If your goals shift, you can exit after six months of study with a standalone Graduate Certificate or after one year with a Graduate Diploma qualification. 

You can also begin your studies with a shorter qualification like the six-month Graduate Certificate and continue on to complete the Graduate Diploma (one year) or full master’s degree.

Study hours

Your courses will require a combination of different learning formats, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Aside from your classes, you’ll also need to allocate additional time for independent study. This may include assignments, readings, projects and contributing to online discussion forums. As a rough guide, full-time studies may require 12-26 hours of class time and 14-18 hours of independent study per week.
