Entry requirements

Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.

  • A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) or bachelor honours (AQF level 8) degree or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution; OR
  • A completed nested or related graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or higher or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution.

This degree requires a Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to an Adelaide University 4.5 on a 7-point scale for entry.

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Overview

Adelaide University’s Master of Finance and Business Analytics will prepare you for advanced roles in financial services. If you’re looking to change careers, deepen your business knowledge or widen your job prospects – this degree is for you. 

Over two years of full-time study, you’ll build a solid foundation across key business disciplines, while deepening your understanding of financial concepts like equity valuation, fixed income securities, derivatives and investment management. You’ll also sharpen your analytical skills, exploring customer analytics, predictive and visual analytics and modern technologies like AI and big data. Work on real-world projects focusing on finance and business analytics, so you’ll be ready to enter your chosen field.  

Your studies will prepare you to work in various industries, including commercial banking, investment banking, equity research, corporate finance consulting, private equity, corporate treasury, risk analysis and credit analysis.  

What you'll learn

Learn how to turn data and financial records into helpful business insights with our Master of Finance and Business Analytics. 

In your first year, build foundational business knowledge with courses on quantitative methods, economic principles, accounting concepts and methods, and principles of finance. You’ll also learn about equity valuation and analysis, fixed income securities, fundamentals of business analytics and customer analytics. Discover equity principles like determination of growth, valuation of firms in financial trouble, firm investments, and mergers and acquisitions. Explore interest rate risk, bond valuation, bond portfolio management and interest rate derivatives. Build computing skills to solve key business analytic problems and practice how to analyse customer data to improve businesses performance. 

In your second year, focus on derivatives, advanced investment management, predictive and visual analytics, ethical principles in finance and accounting, managing with big data analytics, and chatbots and text analytics for business. Explore derivative markets, including key pricing models and trading strategies for managing risk. Study investment portfolios – the theory behind them, construction techniques, asset classes and management. Construct prediction models to help business decision-making, using traditional and emerging AI methods, while focusing on how to clearly represent data.  Understand the Regulatory Codes of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, ready to work as an ethical finance professional. Use AI algorithms to extract valuable insights and uncover how to design, develop, and deploy chatbots. Get hands-on experience with both a finance industry project and a business analytics industry project. This is where you’ll get to put what you’ve learned into practice in real-world contexts among industry professionals.  

Design a study path that works for you

This degree is part of a stackable set of qualifications, meaning your study choices are flexible. If your goals shift, you can exit after six months of study with a standalone Graduate Certificate or after one year with a Graduate Diploma qualification. 

You can also begin your studies with a shorter qualification like the six-month Graduate Certificate and continue on to complete the Graduate Diploma (one year) or full master’s degree.

Study hours

Your courses will require a combination of different learning formats, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Aside from your classes, you’ll also need to allocate additional time for independent study. This may include assignments, readings, projects and contributing to online discussion forums. As a rough guide, full-time studies may require 12-26 hours of class time and 14-18 hours of independent study per week.
