Entry requirements

Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.

  • A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) or bachelor honours (AQF level 8) degree or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution; OR
  • A completed nested or related graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or higher or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution.

Explore the intricate relationship between design and human experience with Adelaide University. Our Master of Design specialising in Interior Architecture will provide you with an advanced understanding of the evolving landscape of design innovation. 

In this degree, you will participate in hands-on projects that encourage both critical and creative thinking. Explore the cultural, social, economic, and technological factors of sustainable design while developing innovative ideas to improve societal quality of life. 

Develop expertise in navigating the complex landscape of art and design policy, including funding opportunities, grant sourcing and application processes. Hone your communication skills and develop effective strategies for collaboration within the diverse design community. 

Choose from a range of electives in your second year, broadening your scope in different interior design and architecture principles. You’ll also complete a yearlong research project, preparing you for a career as an interior designer.

What you'll learn

The Master of Design specialising in Interior Architecture ensures that you are equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of designing environmentally conscious and socially adaptable spaces. 

Your first year of study will see you complete the following core and specialised courses: 

  • Art and Design Masters Foundation Studio 
  • Nature, Culture and Sustainability 
  • Art and Design Advanced Theory 
  • Art and Design Business Practices 
  • Art and Design Interdisciplinary Studio 
  • Art and Design Research Methods. 

In second year, you’ll undertake a yearlong project focusing on an aspect of interior architecture that interests you. You’ll also complete professional experience with our industry partners, building important network connections and ensuring a successful career. 

You’ll complete the following courses with a focus on Interior Architecture: 

  • Art and design masters project 1 
  • Art and design masters project 2 
  • Art and design masters report 
  • Art and design professional experience 
  • Elective 
  • Elective. 

The Interior Architecture specialisation will examine how art and design can promote sustainability. You will also explore contemporary issues in interior design culture from a global perspective. 

You will also explore sustainable design principles and business practices, enhancing your design sensibilities. As a graduate, you’ll be well-equipped to make a significant impact in the competitive field of interior architecture. 

Complete two electives in your final year, broadening your skillset and knowledge in a range of fields and allowing you to customise and align your learning with career aspirations.

Design a study path that works for you

This degree is part of a stackable set of qualifications, meaning your study choices are flexible. If your goals shift, you can exit after six months of study with a standalone Graduate Certificate or after one year with a Graduate Diploma qualification. 

You can also begin your studies with a shorter qualification like the six-month Graduate Certificate and continue on to complete the Graduate Diploma (one year) or full master’s degree.

Study hours

Your courses will require a combination of different learning formats, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals.
