Admission criteria

Applications for this program are by invitation only. Applicants are required to have a current enrolment in a qualifying Adelaide University Bachelor of Aviation degree.

Applicants will be selected via a process which includes:

formal interview; AND
flight aptitude test; AND
assessment of Aviation English Proficiency; AND
successful completion of AERO1006 Flight Training Theory 1 with a minimum of 80% class attendance; AND
academic achievement, normally achieving at least a pass average within Bachelor of Aviation studies.

In addition:

Students must obtain a Class I Medical Certificate before commencing flight training. Class II will be considered if Class I held in the last 3 years. The CASA medical must not have any restrictions that would impede the student’s ability to complete the program, and must be held for the duration of the program.
Students must hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) before enrolling in Advanced Flying.

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Overview

Our Graduate Diploma in Aviation is a technical flight training program delivered with Flight Training Adelaide at Parafield Airport. Applications for this program are invitation only, for students with a current enrolment in the Bachelor of Aviation majoring in Pilot.

Obtain the skills, knowledge and competencies to test for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Multi-engine Command Instrument Rating (MECIR). These are professional qualifications recognised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Take introductory courses in advanced flying, aircraft navigation, night flying and instrument flying. You’ll complete ground simulator lessons and be mentored by experienced flight instructors.

While this program is an intensive study commitment, you’ll finish your studies on a rewarding career path. Graduate prepared to work as a first officer in multi-crew aircraft or as a pilot-in-command in single engine aircraft.

What you'll learn

Your studies will teach you advanced aviation skills and prepare you to obtain necessary licences to practice as a pilot. You’ll complete a total of seven courses covering the following topics.

Introductory and advanced flying: Learn core principles of flying including pre-flight and post-flight procedures, basic in-flight manoeuvres and aircraft operating. You’ll then progress to studying key competencies required to be recommended for the Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) flight test.

Aircraft navigation: Learn how to carry out cross country flying using visual flight rules with professionalism and accuracy. You’ll then carry out cross country flying and aircraft handling to pass the Commercial Pilot Licence Flight Test.

Night flying: Learn how to confidently operate an aircraft at night under visual flight rules.

Instrument flight: Hone your flying abilities under Instrument Flight Rules and gain a multi-engine endorsement. Complete IFR ground simulator lessons and successfully pass the CASA Instrument Rating Flight Test.

Your assessments will include the following:

Flight and navigation practice
Practical exams including the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Command Instrument Rating (MECIR)
Theoretical exams with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Note: This graduate diploma, studied alongside the Bachelor of Aviation majoring in Pilot, is a demanding study commitment. You’ll need to have a minimum of three weekdays and an occasional weekend day available for flying. Flights will also be scheduled outside normal business hours.

Applications for Australian students to study at Adelaide University will open in August 2025. Applications will be via SATAC for most undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs.

Applications to study a 100% online degree will open in July 2025 via a direct application process.

In the meantime, you could start your studies at UniSA or the University of Adelaide in 2025 and continue on to Adelaide University in 2026.

Adelaide University will open in January 2026. Your studies will start at different times depending on what study period you’ve applied for. Adelaide University is currently using a semester model, which means most degrees start in Semester 1. Some degrees are also available to start in mid-year, sometimes with a different degree structure.
