Entry requirements
Admission criteria
To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.
Secondary education (Year 12)
- Completion of a secondary education qualification equivalent to the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
- Completion of an award from a registered training organisation (RTO) at Certificate IV (AQF level 4) or higher.
Higher education study
- Successful completion of at least 6 months full-time study (or equivalent part-time) in a higher education award program.
English language entry requirements
In addition, international students who speak English as an additional language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at Adelaide University. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Overview
In our Bachelor of Science majoring in Geology, you’ll build a strong foundation in scientific principles and their application to our home planet – how it works, how it has evolved and how its different systems interact. You’ll build your knowledge in the materials of the Earth, how the elements of the planet combine in different ways to form minerals and rocks – how to identify them and how to read them to unravel a story of Earth history. Explore contemporary issues, from hazard mitigation to the extraction and management of Earth’s natural resources. Learn about deep time and climate change. Experience a fieldwork-focused program that uses the natural laboratory of the outdoors and combine this with theoretical and laboratory work. Graduate with the expertise to work across industries such as critical mineral exploration, mining, water management, engineering, renewable energy and more.

What you'll learn
During your Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Geology, you’ll complete a range of Earth Science courses that have a strong practical and fieldwork component, and mix these with Common Core courses and elective courses that provide you with a solid scientific knowledge base and specialised skills in geology.
Discover how oceans and mountains are formed and explore the concepts of plate tectonics, geodynamics and deep time. Learn how to apply chemistry and physics to the Earth to probe the depths of our planet. Understand the distribution of elements and how they are concentrated to form mineral deposits. Identify and analyse different Earth materials, rocks and minerals and what they tell us about how our planet evolved.
Build transferrable skills that can be applied to numerous careers with your Common Core courses, including critical thinking, analysis, writing and research skills. Your Science Core courses will explore climate science, environmental issues, ethics and our future as a society on planet Earth. You’ll also tackle data handling and visualisation, including quantitative methods, scientific statistics and how to make decisions using big data.
You’ll have the opportunity to undertake field studies in Australia and internationally, and in your final year, you’ll embark on a Field Geoscience Program, with the aim of creating four-dimensional models of a geological terrain.

Industry trends
Geologists and Earth scientists have valuable skills that are essential in many industries, from mining and energy to government and natural hazard mitigation. They develop frameworks for mineral and energy exploration, construct geological surveys, forecast, mitigate and manage natural disasters, consult on construction projects, and evaluate environmental and economic impacts of mining projects. Their work is essential to achieve many of the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals, and is not only vital for sustainable development but also significantly boosts the economy. Study hours
Your courses will require a combination of different learning formats, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals.
