Course overview

This course explores approaches to practice-based research in creative writing. Students will conceptualise a research question and plan a structure for a large-scale project. They will be exposed to a range of research methods, as well as the ethical implications of conducting those methods. Students will also learn how to express their research in a range of fiction and creative nonfiction, including prose forms and poetry.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify gaps in research and develop a research question
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the practicalities of research, including ethics
  • Create an original piece of publishable writing by drawing on varied and project-appropriate research methods
  • Evaluate and reflect on research practices and methodologies
  • Critically read and assess creative writing prduced by students themselves, their peers and other writers; offer sensitive feedback to other writers' work
