Course overview

This course teaches students how to write, craft and critique prose in a range of forms. Students will learn and practice the fundamentals of fiction, such as plot, setting, character, point-of-view and style, and will be exposed to a range of theories associated with these elements. Students will also develop their critical skills through reading innovative and engaging fiction and will learn to reflect critically on their own and others’ writing.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with a range of creative writing techniques
  • Read and analyse a range of contemporary writing examples and contexts
  • Evaluate and apply methodologies and theories to fictional outputs
  • Create, analyse, and edit pieces of fiction suitable for publication
  • Critically assess creative writing produced by students themselves, their peers and other writers; offer sensitive feedback to other writers' work
