Course overview
Fine Arts Practice and Research reviews key theory and concepts applied in contemporary art practice and practice-based research in the fine arts. It will build upon students’ understanding of practice and research in the field, while introducing advanced methods and methodologies through an examination of case-studies. Students will interrogate their motivations, interests and practices to locate their work within the expansive field of contemporary art and develop a research plan. The course cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills, equipping students with skills to engage with pressing contemporary issues and communicate their ideas effectively, whether in professional practice or practice-based research in higher degrees.
Course learning outcomes
- Articulate relevant theories and concepts applied in contemporary art practice and research methodologies to a level appropriate for professional practice or further research
- Demonstrate their understanding of practice and research in the field through discussion of advanced methods and methodologies and analysis of case-studies
- Interrogate their motivations, interests, and practices to locate their work within the broad field of art and creative practice
- Cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills to engage with current issues in art or society and develop a creative proposal or comprehensive research plan
- Communicate their ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to specialist and non-specialist audiences in the context of professional practice or practice-based research
