Course overview

This course will extend skills and techniques utilised in contemporary ceramic practice to produce multiple clay objects or editions through the process of slip casting and wheel throwing. Students will develop knowledge in historical development and contemporary design of the functional / utilitarian based objects, surface treatments, studio and materials management, kiln procedures, and occupational health and safety issues. Students will gain advanced skills in wheel throwing, slip casting and majolica glazing as methods and finishes to produce multiple clay objects or editions.

Course learning outcomes

  • Execute technical skills and apply material processes in the production of contemporary art objects using slip casting, glazing and kiln firing techniques.
  • Critique the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary studio based production using ceramic production methods.
  • Implement knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements of the ceramic studio and/or workshop and in the manufacture of contemporary art objects.
