Course overview

In this course, students will examine the evolution of significant aspects of visual culture within the historical context of 20th century modernism. Students will gain a broad knowledge of the many manifestations of the visual culture of 20th century modernity. Students will undertake research focussed on a particular area from the field to understand the technology, politics and philosophies behind the innovations of the early 20th century modernism.

  • Explain the technological, political and philosophical imperatives behind the aesthetic innovations of early 20th century modernism.
  • Trace the origins of 20th century visual art and culture.
  • Identify significant sociopolitical and socioeconomic developments that influenced the course of 20th century visual culture.

  • Discuss the critical strategies underpinning the artistic innovations of late modernism.
