Course overview
This course will provide students with practical skills in a range of intaglio printmaking techniques including etching and to develop visual research skills which will enable students to produce technically and conceptually resolved prints. Students will develop knowledge of printmaking terms and concepts, aspects of relevant printmaking history and theory, analysis of set project material, visual research skills to allow for development of project work, and understand safe work practices appropriate for a collaborative studio environment. Course content will include instruction in a range of intaglio techniques including etching metal plates, aquatint, drypoint and collagraphs. Ink preparation, plate wiping, printing in black and white and in colour, editioning and creation of unique prints will also be covered.
Course learning outcomes
- Execute technical skills and apply material processes in the production of contemporary art using etching and intaglio techniques.
- Critique the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that underpin the use of etching and intaglio in contemporary printmaking practice.
- Implement knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements of the Printmaking studio and/or workshop and in contemporary printmaking practice.
