Course overview

This course will introduce students to techniques of wheel throwing and coiling as a means to create and explore functional and abstracted vessels in clay. Students will develop skills in wheel throwing; coiling; and will be introduced to coloured slips and glazes as a means of exploring the potential of the surface. Students will gain knowledge in historical and contemporary ceramic methods.

Course learning outcomes

  • Use technical skills and material processes in the production of contemporary art objects using wheel throwing and coiling techniques.
  • Summarise the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary studio based production using handmade ceramic techniques.
  • Employ knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements of the ceramic studio and/or workshop and in the manufacture of contemporary art objects.
