Course overview

This course will build on students' theoretical understanding of the field of contemporary jewellery as a creative object making practice and to develop expertise in the basic metalworking skills that underpins this approach to jewellery making. Students will develop the different metalwork skills required to complete basic projects in conceptual jewellery design and manufacture in a contemporary context. Students will be introduced to the metalwork processes of saw-piercing, filing, riveting, soldering and basic metal forming in conjunction with jewellery hand tools and jewellery workshop equipment to create wearable objects.

Course learning outcomes

  • Use technical skills and material processes in the production of contemporary jewellery objects using saw-piercing, filing, riveting, soldering and metal forming.
  • Summarise the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary jewellery practice in the use of metalworking techniques.
  • Employ knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements of the Jewellery studio and/or workshop and in the manufacture of contemporary art objects.
