Course overview

The aim of this course is to examine the athletic journey from grassroots participation through to elite competition, focusing on the managerial requirements that facilitate all aspects of this process. Students will examine a variety of applied approaches to recruiting and retaining sport participants before focusing on the elite performance pathway, gaining a valuable insight into the operational requirements of talent identification and development. The course concludes with a focus on elite sport, specifically examining the unique pressures and commitments required of the elite athlete during competition, how they are managed and the impact of retirement.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand the role the athletic pathway plays in the management of all the participating stakeholders in sport
  • Explain the role of sport development in achieving organisational objectives in relation to youth and grassroots participation in sport
  • Analyse the key issues involved in the creation, development and management of the elite athlete pathway
  • Identify the ways in which sports clubs and organisations manage and support elite athletes
