Course overview

This course aims to develop students' knowledge of teaching and coaching principles and apply these competently when teaching and coaching individuals or groups in sport. The course analyses teaching and coaching behaviours that foster increased participation and enhanced physical activity performance across a diverse population. By integrating contemporary learning theories in relevant experiential learning tasks involving a variety of sports, learners will develop their teaching and coaching practices supported by an evidence base, enabling graduates to apply methodologies and instructional processes to develop skilled physical performance as teachers or coaches.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse teaching and coaching behaviour and the impact on participation and learning across a variety of sports
  • Demonstrate competencies to plan, teach and coach a variety of sports and recreational activities to a broad spectrum of the population
  • Demonstrate leadership capabilities for managing the responsibilities of teaching and/or coaching
  • Identify key recent research literature in the field with consideration of its applicability to future teaching and coaching
  • Analyse sport participation data and programs across Australia to identify implications to teaching and coaching
