Course overview

This course will introduce the principles underpinning good coaching practice and apply them in training sessions for diverse populations. This course develops knowledge and skills in the area of sports coaching, with an emphasis placed on coaching pedagogy highlighting the social, cultural and pedagogical concepts underpinning good coaching practice. The course introduces the application of coaching principles as outlined by the Australian Sports Commission to the coaching environment.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply foundational pedagogical principles of coaching that inform coaching session plans to meet the needs of participants and achieve performance goals in physical activity and sport
  • Describe the Australian sports systems and athlete development pathways and models and how these influence coaching practice
  • Review and reflect on a planned coaching session to identify strategies to assist in improving session designs and coaching practices for diverse populations
  • Demonstrate a range of communication skills relevant to the delivery of sports coaching sessions in training and sporting activities
