Course overview

This course introduces students to the importance of physical activity for good health across the lifespan. Students will learn about the far-reaching effect of various types of physical activity on personal health, and the connection between sedentary behaviour and the prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Ways to incorporate sustainable physical activity into the lifestyle of individuals, communities and populations will be explored.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the future career options available in sports and exercise discipline areas and develop a study plan to achieve this career goal
  • Describe the role of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in the aetiology, prevention, and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases
  • Examine personal, social, environmental, and political determinants that contribute to active and inactive lifestyles
  • Apply individual and population level recommendations and guidelines for sustaining physically active lifestyles and for reducing sedentary behaviours throughout the lifespan
