Course overview
This course will develop students’ cognitive and critical thinking skills through the planning and execution of applied social research into a contemporary social work issue with relevance to policy and/or practice. Students will develop advanced knowledge of applied social research and the contribution of social work research to evidence-based practice and policy through topic selection, literature search and review, design of research methodology and analysis of social work values and ethics in research.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate initiative and judgement in the identification of an appropriate research topic, aims and research questions which have relevance to social work
- Apply advanced knowledge and skills in applied social research to design and implement an ethical research methodology and theoretical framework consistent with research aims and questions
- Demonstrate cognitive and technical skills required to create accounts of research progress in honours seminars and in individual supervision
- Critically analyse data in systematic ways that foreground the contributions of social work values and ethics in the context of social research as well as the role of social work research in informing evidence-based policy and practice.
