Course overview

This course will advance students understanding of theoretical and material frameworks for living, interpreting and analysing diversity and social cohesion. It will increase students understanding of how theory frames knowledge and experience in societies with multiple normative centres of value.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify & discuss a diverse range of familiar & new cultural practices and contexts
  • Analyse a diverse range of cultural practices and contexts and synthesize these with the familiar
  • Evaluate the application of complex theoretical concepts (and their limits) in the study of boundaries between selves and de-centred others
  • Communicate an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice by conducting appropriate ethnographic and interpretive research using a range of methods
  • Drive socially cohesive behaviours in a professional context by taking the lead in interacting respectfully and in a culturally-responsive way with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrate development and embedding of a reflexive, ethical attitude and behaviours toward others
